With unemployment figures hitting 2.64m, a 17 year high, the UK's economic strategy has never been more important.
We have heard a lot about the government's growth plan to encourage the private sector to provide jobs for those previously employed in the public sector. However, there has been little debate about where exactly these jobs are going to come from and what types of jobs they will be.
This event will explore this very practical issue with a panel of guest speakers including:
- Ian Murray MP for Edinburgh South and member of the Shadow BID team
- David Riley, Entrepeneur and business start-up expert
- Jeremy Skinner, Senior Economist, Greater London Authority
We aim to encourage an open and active forum for a debate of fundamental importance to the UK economic development agenda.
It will focus on the following key questions:
- How feasible are the key elements of the Government’s growth plan, for example, Enterprise Zones, reform of the planning system, investment in major infrastructure projects, continued deregulation of business administration, and Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs)?
- What are the day-to-day realities facing UK businesses preventing their investment in recruitment and training?
- Practically speaking, how do we get ex-public sector employees to be employed by the private sector?
