GVA is taking an active role in promoting diversity within the real estate industry through a new paid work experience programme and degree apprenticeship course.
Launched this week (25th June) at GVA’s London and Birmingham offices, the work experience initiative is designed to provide students coming to the end of their A-levels with a practical understanding of the real estate sector and the opportunities it can offer.
Students undertake a two week programme, with time split between two of the company’s business units. Working with a senior member of the team, they will receive in-depth and practical experience.
Those who do well on the programme may then be offered access to a degree apprenticeship course, with one day a week spent studying at university and four days working with GVA.
Funded through the government’s national apprenticeship levy, the degree apprenticeship course takes between four and five years to complete, with graduates receiving a degree, chartered status, and an Assessment of Professional Competence (APC), a key step in becoming a quantity or building surveyor.
The initiative has been spearheaded by Daniel Williams from GVA’s Future Talent team. He said: “Our experience has been that many young people at school or college aren’t exposed to the opportunities that the real estate sector can offer.
“This is a sector that in some way impacts everyone, regardless of race or gender, and we are committed to ensuring that the industry reflects this at every level by educating students on the opportunities available to them before they enter further education.
“This will help to broaden the industry’s talent pool and help to ensure diversity in the future leaders of real estate.” The first intake will see seven students placed in the Birmingham office and nine in London, with the intention to grow to 15 in each office over time.
Work experience students will spend time with directors and senior directors in the Land & Development; Planning, Development and Regeneration; Valuation; or Office Agency teams.
The paid work experience programme and degree apprenticeship courses will run alongside GVA’s existing graduate programme. For further information contact Daniel Williams on 0121 609 8216 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
