Bilfinger GVA’s, Newcastle Land and Development team, acting on behalf of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Durham has successfully concluded the sale by tender of the former Durham Police Headquarters site at Aykley Heads, Durham City to Persimmon Homes.

The site, which extends to 27.4 acres (11 hectares), has the benefit of planning permission for the erection of 230 dwellings on the southern part of the site with associated access, landscaping and open space on the site of the (now demolished) former police HQ complex. The northern section of the site has the potential to bring forward additional residential development in the future.

Ray Minto, Director at Bilfinger GVA comments: “This was a complicated and challenging instruction requiring the demolition of the old police headquarters and the relocation of a Grade II listed telecommunications mast. This prime city centre development opportunity, as anticipated, has attracted strong interest from the national house builders.”

He added: “The obstacles which arose in finalising this major disposal were overcome through a strong working partnership established between the Police and Crime Commissioner and the successful bidder, Persimmon Homes.”

Ron Hogg, Police, Crime and Victims’ Commissioner said: “I am pleased that the sale has been agreed, which will help to protect and create jobs in the construction industry and also increase the number of houses in the area.”

He added: “The income from the sale of the site more than covered the cost of building the brand new Durham Police HQ at Aykley Heads.”
