The Midlands office of GVA has raised well over £30,000 for charity, thanks to a team of 28 intrepid cyclists who undertook the first Birmingham Velo in support of the Alzheimer’s Society.

Taking placed on closed roads, the event included a 100 mile course beginning and ending on Broad Street in Birmingham city centre and taking in parts of Staffordshire, Worcestershire, and Sandwell and Dudley.

The team raised £10,444 through their Just Giving page – twice their original fundraising target – which has been double-matched by GVA.

Ian Stringer, who took part in the event, said: “This was a real challenge but one that prompted an overwhelmingly positive response from our Midlands team.

"That we managed to double our original target is one thing, but GVA’s commitment to double-match the funds raised means that we’ve been able to make a significant contribution to a wholly worthwhile charity."

GVA is committed to raising awareness of dementia across its workforce and providing support to staff who are either directly affected, or so they can help people in their communities.

GVA was the first consultancy to undertake dementia friendly audits on all the developments under management across the UK and staff have volunteered at care homes, creating dementia friendly gardens up and down the country.

Chris Whetstone from GVA’s corporate responsibility team, said: “Dementia is one of the greatest health challenges we face in society today and following its selection by our staff as our charity partner, we have been proud to support the Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Scotland for the past two years.

"Over that time, we have raised and donated £160,000 to this exceedingly worthwhile cause, with £75,000 committed to the charity this year alone.

"GVA match funds any office organised fundraiser or event in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society or Alzheimer Scotland and once a year our offices can select one event which can receive a double donation from the company.

"We find that matched donation encourages our staff to fundraise harder and set higher targets, enabling more money to go to our chosen charity partner."
