On May 16, a group of volunteers from GVA’s Manchester office worked hard, despite the heavy rain, to improve the gardens of Holmfield Residential Care Home so that the residents could enjoy the benefits of being outdoors when the summer comes.

Richard Clark, the Landscape architect leading on the day said: “Heavy rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the GVA volunteers who worked hard to enhance the garden at Holmfield Residential Care Home. Volunteers improved existing flower beds and planted shrubs and perennials. Flower pots on the patios were given a makeover and planted with colourful annuals and benches were put in place for residents to sit and enjoy the garden.”

The team maintained great enthusiasm throughout the day, planting new shrubs and flowers in recently created beds, mulching shrubs and flower beds, weeding, filling timber planters with compost and refreshing gardening containers with new compost and plants. At least they did not have to do any watering for the new planting!

The team had only positive feedback at the end of the day and look forward to future volunteering opportunities.

Residents and staff are delighted with the makeover, as Jenny Wickstead, Manager at Holmfield Residential Care Home explains: “There is a wealth of research which shows the benefits to health and wellbeing that comes from access to outdoor space and so we’re absolutely thrilled with the work done by Groundwork and GVA – we cannot thank them enough.

This Manchester garden make-over is just one of thirty happening at care homes across the UK as part of the Living through Landscapes partnership, which has been made possible thanks to a grant from the Big Lottery Fund. GVA employees will continue to volunteer with Groundwork, who are managing and delivering the landscaping works.
