An exciting opportunity was presented to GVA towards the end of last year to help the Alzheimer’s Society transform one of their dementia care centres, Templeton.

GVA were extremely keen to take on this volunteering opportunity because of enthusiastic feedback from staff about wanting to volunteer more, our strong partnership with the Alzheimer’s and to make use of our property expertise.

The Templeton Centre has been running in a converted part of the United Reformed Church for approxiamately12 years. The Day Centre has actually been in existence since 1998; previously based in the grounds of a local orthopaedic hospital, until we were forced to leave when the hospital was closed for housing development.

Since the current centre has been in operation, they have had no re-decoration done at all. Therefore there was a lot of wear and tear from daily use and it was in need of some care to make it bright, cheerful and welcoming again.

On 9 Feb, GVA’s West-end management made a start at transforming the activity room of the centre. This is the first phase of the project where we will then have PMC transforming the lounge with some clients, acuity brightening up the hallway and the building team taking two days to complete the largest main hall area. This will then lead to a full transformation of an entire care centre just by GVA volunteers.

West-end management had an enjoyable time working together to sand, clean and re-paint the activity room into a cheerful yellow. Patrick (senior director) even arrived just before pack up time to help paint a door! Overall, everyone felt a great sense of accomplishment and is looking forward to the completion of the place.
